The high and rising cost of health care is of serious concern to all US stakeholders—except, perhaps, to those for whom excessive spending represents income. More than half of adults now report that it is difficult to afford their health care costs. Not surprisingly, this varies by income and is much higher among the approximately 8 percent of the US population (25 million) who remain uninsured. Disparities in life expectancy due to chronic disease have drawn national attention; most of the racial, economic, and geographic disparities are due to a handful of modifiable risks that generally require effective medical care to be fully and effectively addressed.
