Genomic testing is an important diagnostic tool that can enable more precise, proactive, and effective clinical treatments while improving health outcomes and lowering costs. For example, one recent study suggests whole-genome sequencing (rWGS)-based rapid precision medicine (RPM) has clinical utility and can reduce net healthcare expenditures for infants in neonatal ICUs.

Identifying an accurate diagnosis faster in any age group can provide for more timely decision-making and reduce the number of costly diagnostics and imprecise treatments. Yet despite the benefits of genomic testing, there are barriers that limit its optimal use.
