Around 20 percent of Medicare enrollees are also enrolled in Medicaid benefits, according to a report from Kaiser Family Foundation published Jan. 31.

The dually eligible population receives primary coverage through Medicare and some assistance through Medicaid.

Enrollment varies by state, according to the report, because in some states more people meet the financial criteria to be eligible, either because more people have lower incomes, or because states expand eligibility requirements.
