Healthcare is one of the most hotly debated subjects in contemporary politics. What role should government play in the provision of medical services? Many people believe healthcare is a human right. As such, the government should make it available to the public free of charge. This sounds compassionate and humane. It’s not. The more we examine proposals for government-funded medicine—let alone government-run medicine—the less attractive it becomes.

Be very careful before you declare something a human right. All rights come with obligations. When the Founding Fathers proclaimed a natural right to life, they meant a right not to be murdered by other human beings. We have a negative obligation to refrain from harming our neighbors.
