Secretary Alex Azar has identified value-based transformation as one of his key priorities for the Department of Health & Human Services (HHS). One arrow in Secretary Azar’s quiver to hit this target is the Physician-focused Payment Model Technical Advisory Committee (PTAC). The PTAC was authorized by the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization of 2015 (MACRA) to provide an avenue for the private sector to bring forward physician-focused proposals for alternate payment models. PTAC evaluates and considers these models for recommendation to the HHS Secretary for testing by the Center for Medicare & Medicaid Innovation (CMMI). The committee’s members include individuals with national recognition for their expertise in physician-focused payment models and related delivery of care under the Medicare program.
