Although estimates vary, approximately 10 million to 12 million older Americans have Alzheimer’s dementia or mild cognitive impairment due to Alzheimer’s disease. Other causes such as Lewy Body, Frontotemporal Degeneration, and vascular dementia account for another 20-40 percent of total dementia cases. And, looking ahead, these numbers are likely to be just the tip of the iceberg as the 73 million baby boomers progress through their last decades of life. Although the prevalence of dementia is fewer than 5 percent among those 65 to 69 years, it rises to 35 percent after the age of 90, and the surviving boomers will begin to reach this threshold in 2036.
