In the context of ever-increasing automation across sectors, one question often looms over discussions about technology in home care: “Will robots replace humans?”

The short answer is no, robots won’t be replacing humans anytime soon. Robots are too expensive, for one thing—we’re a long way from seeing a Stevie or Juva in every home. Also, most technologies still require human partners to set them up, monitor their performance, fix their malfunctions, and more. And most importantly, although robotic technologies can support independence and quality of life for many individuals, they will never be able to approximate the complex combination of technical and interpersonal competencies that are essential to the provision of high-quality, person-centered care.
