Yet another story crossed my desk about a medical group allegedly paying for referrals. Maybe I was naïve in thinking that senior healthcare executives had a pretty good, at least facile, feel for legal right and wrong in the healthcare space; maybe I was wrong. And maybe some of those execs simply had bad counsel or decided to “wing it” when fomenting their plans to grow service lines and market segments.

For those new to healthcare operations, there are several broad laws that apply specifically to healthcare. And, for as long as I can remember, paying for referrals has never been OK. Yet I’m dazzled by folks either misled by burdensome hubris, oblivious to current healthcare law, or both.
