Policymakers are concerned with a potential lack of patient privacy regulations under the ONC’s interoperability rule.

Following the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) interoperability rule, developers should adopt a regulation that addresses patient privacy protections on third-party applications, according to a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association (JAMIA).

The final ONC interoperability rule aims to drive patient access and sharing of their electronic health information, allowing the individual the ability to coordinate their own healthcare. It also calls on medical providers and device developers to promote patient data access using third-party apps and APIs.
