At the United Nations climate conference in Glasgow, 13 countries pledged to aim for net-zero emissions in their health systems by 2050. Doing so will be a challenge, but there are clear strategies systems can incorporate to reach the goal, The Lancet reported Nov. 17.

If the healthcare industry were a country, it would be the fifth-largest climate polluter on the planet, according to The Lancet. It also stands to lose a lot to the effects of climate change. The U.S. accounts for a quarter of the world’s health-sector greenhouse emissions and is not one of the 13 countries that joined the commitment.
