More than five million Medicare recipients struggle to pay for their prescription drugs. To make ends meet, many patients deviate from their prescribed regimen, seeking out cheaper medicines or spending less on essential items such as food, gas, or rent. In addition to the negative clinical consequences of nonadherence that disproportionately impact low-income individuals and communities of color, in certain instances failing to comply with a recommended treatment regimen can lead to increased total costs for both patients and the health care system.
