Given the lack of available timely testing and containment for COVID-19, major efforts will be needed to safely relax the current guidance for social distancing. As Thomas R. Frieden, MD, former director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, highlights, a key component of the needed response moving forward includes rapid scale-up of contact tracing. Exemplar contact tracing necessitates close coordination between testing sites and the health department to 1) reach the individual with the positive test (index patient); 2) elicit information about their recent contacts; to then 3) notify and counsel these contacts of their potential exposure to an infectious disease; and 4) facilitate appropriate testing and linkage to indicated health care.
