The Government Accountability Office (GAO) released a report Monday calling for swift action by the federal government to shore up its response to the coronavirus pandemic, particularly with regard to taking a bigger role in medical supply chains.

“[A]s the end of 2020 approaches, urgent actions are needed to help ensure an effective federal response on a range of public health and economic issues,” it stated.

Problems identified in this fourth report issued by the GAO since the CARES Act mandated its oversight in March 2020 include:

  • One-third to one-half of states reported shortages in reagents and testing supplies other than swabs and transport media
  • One-third of responding states indicated they were “greatly” or “completely” concerned about insufficient supplies...
