— Here’s what we can do to boost the supply of providers
According to a recent report published by the Association of American Medical Colleges, thousands of lives will be lost each year unless the U.S. addresses a looming crisis: an alarming lack of primary care doctors — a shortage projected to reach as high as 48,000 doctors by 2034.
Demographics — specifically, the rapidly growing aging population — continue to drive the increase in demand, but the supply of doctors simply isn’t keeping pace. Two-fifths of today’s primary care doctors will reach retirement age within 10 years and only one-fifth of graduating medical students are entering primary care. And the problem will only be exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.
