Congress Should Restore Health Care Competition, Not Let Providers Exploit COVID-19 To Raise Prices

Congress is contemplating a new stimulus bill to provide relief from the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic. If it comes to pass this new bill should include provisions that would not cost the federal government any money but would provide immediate relief to health care consumers across the country. The needed provisions, which Congress has discussed before but not adopted, should focus on reducing the ability of dominant hospital systems—which have taken over our health care system—to use their monopoly power, especially over out-of-network emergency patients, to charge high prices that harm consumers. Today, more than two-thirds of all US hospitals are part of systems and this number is likely to grow.
