Apple holds itself up as a rare guardian of consumers’ personal health data privacy. The Apple privacy policy has helped the company forge relationships with hospitals and medical researchers.

Never mind iPhones. Apple‘s most important contribution to mankind ultimately may be revolutionizing the world of health care.

At least that’s what Chief Executive Tim Cook told a TV interviewer this year. What he didn’t say, though, was how the Apple privacy policy could play a big role in its health care push. Nor did he say what pitfalls might lurk with the thorny issue of data privacy.
