The American College of Physicians, the American Academy of Pediatrics and four other medical associations, which together represent 560,000 physicians and medical students, are urging the U.S. Department of Justice to reconsider its decision not to defend key parts of the ACA.

A group of 20 states filed a federal lawsuit against the federal government in February, claiming the ACA’s individual mandate requiring most Americans to purchase insurance or to pay a penalty tax — which the U.S. Supreme Court previously upheld in a 2012 decision — is now unconstitutional because the tax penalty is no longer in effect after being repealed as part of the 2017 tax bill.
