In 2016, at the age of 32, Ady Barkan received a diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and three to five years to live. He ultimately underwent a procedure called a tracheostomy to allow a ventilator to breathe for him. The disease may have robbed Barkan of his natural voice, but the activist and former lawyer took to the road in 2017 to advocate for Medicare for All and other progressive health care measures. In an interview with The Guardian, Barkan explained his family paid almost $9,000 per month for his care needs—even with good insurance.
